This question “Searching for a meaningful Identity” could be interrupted several ways …..

  • I want to find a meaning in my Name
  • I want to find meaning in my past
  • I want to find a meaning for my current and future
  • I want to find a meaning in who I am and why I am here        
  • Is a meaningful Identity one that allows me to buy, travel, trade, log in or publish my intents?

My focus is the last one and I am thinking about the layers for a meaningful Identity that allows me to fully participate as a citizen, as Digital Footprints could help in some cases

Buy

  • using cash - no identity needed
  • using credit/ debit card  or on-line/mobile payment – no identity needed by the retailer, however high level of assurance in background to ensure that the payment is/ will be completed
  • access to mortgage/ loan - strong form of identity (assurance) needed

Travel

  • walking and cycling - no identity needed
  • public transport – possible to have the scenario of no identity needed ….. but some discounts and travel cards need some level of official identity card to get access to the services and or prove you are entitled to it.
  • driving my car – several forms as the car is uniquely identifiable, as is the insurance and the driver
  • crossing the boarder – strong form of identity (assurance) needed

Trade (business)

  • mutual trust between the parties
  • checking of credit – no identity needed
  • at point of sale – formal agreed/ approved identity between the parties needed to transact

Barter (non cash transactions)

  • emphasis on social trust - no formal identity needed

Login/ Access

  • company Network access – physically protected by own identity scheme. Trust by procedure
  • public access – simple checking
  • banking – high level of process and procedure to grant first time and repeated access.  Trust by procedure

Selling and Marketing

  • the more I know about you, your location, your behaviour, how to reach you the better – PII
  • anonymised data gives overall trends but personalisation is the value proposition by being able to identify uniquness for you from the masses

Intent casting

  • Your intent matched to my willingness – no PII or identity needed
