re-identification: the fatal flaw that means it is not quite as it seams

Image
The Re identification.pdf Download this file Daniel Barth-Jones has a critique of re-identification studies that informs the conversation about risks: In a recent Health Affairs blog article, he provided a critical re-examination of the famous re-identification of Massachusetts Governor William Weld’s health information. This famous re-identification attack was popularized by recently appointed FTC Senior Privacy Adviser, Paul Ohm, in his 2010 paper “Broken Promises of Privacy”. Ohm’s paper provides a gripping account of Latanya Sweeney’s famous re-identification of Weld’s health insurance data using a Cambridge, MA voter list. The Weld attack has been frequently cited echoing Ohm’s claim that computer scientists can purportedly identify individuals within de-identified data with “astonishing ease.” However, the voter list supposedly used to “re-identify” Weld contained only 54,000 residents and Cambridge demographics at the time of the re-identification attempt show that

Can Digital Footprints Lead to Greater Financial Access? via @thetenthkabir @CGAP

Kabir Kumar write a great blog here Can Digital Footprints Lead to Greater Financial Access? on CGAP, advancing financial access for the worlds poor.  It is about a full report which is here “ ..cell phone users generates data – from basic call data records , to mobile money transactional data , to data from social media usage and so on — that leaves what can be called a ‘digital footprint.’ Whether we call it digital footprint or something else, the truth is that the existence of this data is quite extraordinary for those of us interested in developing services for the poor and people with little or no formal financial access. In fact, in a number of countries, basic cell phone usage data may be the only source of information on vast sections of the low-income population that is both electronic and available in aggregate form in one or two data warehouses. In other words, it is available in a way that can be analyzed.” There is so much great material in this report you have to

Identity (directory) with No hub and No Centre via the amazing @Kim_Cameron

Source : http://www.identityblog.com/?p=1220 “In the last frame of the diagram, any of the directories represented by the blue symbol could be an on-premise AD, a Windows Azure AD, something hybrid, an OpenLDAP directory, an Oracle directory or anything else.  Our view is that having your directory operated in the cloud simplifies a lot.  And we want WAAD to be the best possible cloud directory service, operating directories that are completely under the control of their data owners:  enterprises, organizations, government departments and startups.”

Ceop targets sex offenders who try to hide their 'digital footprint' - highlights so many issues

Image
Source : http://www.childprotectionineducation.co.uk/blog/?p=933 Ceop plans to ramp up efforts to target child sex offenders who share indecent images of children and try to hide their “digital footprints” online In so many ways this highlights the nub of a dilemma… ·          illegal and morally wrong – ability to track/ trace and bring to justice. Versus ·          freedom of expression and free speech – if anyone can be tracked, how about those speaking out who need some level of anonymity Versus ·          access management and ability to identify – rightful control and controls Versus ·          wrongfully blamed, accused or judged and need ability to correct/ delete/ modify Versus ·          human rights protection – ability to provide some level of protection Versus ·          PII, privacy rights, data protection, laws, regulation and directives – compliance Versus ·          the right to be forgotten

If I start from identity - where do I end up ?

Image
In the old joke, a man goes up to an old-timer and asks how to get to the local hotel. The old man thinks for a minute and then says "It's quite simple really, but I wouldn't start from here!" Taking this thinking….  if I start from Identity where do I end up and is that where I wanted to be or should I have started from somewhere else.  The reason for this is that recently I have spent far too much time on Identity and not enough on Digital Footprint. Starting with Identity I end up with access over value and ability to facilitate over participa te.  Whilst both points are critical one is about control and the other controlling. Starting with Digital Footprints I end up with data that can give me identity if I want it, but I can get social, intent, value, insight, wisdom etc etc Why do we continue to start from Identity?

Searching for a meaningful Identity -

Image
This question “Searching for a meaningful Identity” could be interrupted several ways ….. I want to find a meaning in my Name I want to find meaning in my past I want to find a meaning for my current and future I want to find a meaning in who I am and why I am here         Is a meaningful Identity one that allows me to buy, travel, trade, log in or publish my intents? My focus is the last one and I am thinking about the layers for a meaningful Identity that allows me to fully participate as a citizen, as Digital Footprints could help in some cases Buy using cash - no identity needed using credit/ debit card  or on-line/mobile payment – no identity needed by the retailer, however high level of assurance in background to ensure that the payment is/ will be completed access to mortgage/ loan - strong form of identity (assurance) needed Travel walking and cycling - no identity needed public transport – possible to have the scenario of no identity needed ….. but some d

Is Facebook a phonebook or a directory of identities?

Image
This week I moderated a session (this one was for TRUSTe ) and the focus was on regulation, data protection and law.  Whilst some of the focus was on issues of detail there is still this massive overhang to me that whilst some are rushing down the regulation/ directive/ law route for Identity, PII, data protection and cookies others are just getting on with it.   Way back in January 2011 Facebook stated that their quest is to "make the world more open and connected" by giving out users personal contact information such as home addresses and phone numbers to third-party developers and websites. This all went very quite and it was suspended after public outcry from users and US Congressmen, but whether you like it or not, the social network may be the natural digital place as a directory and how to find someone – it then gives you the place to be social. However, we know that the directory business model is broken and it is only a matter of time before it finally becomes non

11th June : Identity London workshop covering vrm, personal data, lockers, pii, busienss models...

As we have a large and growing group in the UK and London of those interested in: identity, user centric identity, internet identity, vrm, personal data, digital lockers, digital footprint, personal identifiable data (pii) and personal data eco-systems…. And as an outcome from Doc visit to London in April we have decided to try and bring the community together and start a regular (monthly) meet-up/ open working space/ un-conference/ discussion/ for us to meet up and move forward with sharing and achieving. This also builds on a workshop Iain Henderson and I put on at Innovation Warehouse on Personal Data Store interoperability in April ( write up by Phil is here )  and so the outcome is that we have decided that we should do a wider reaching day with Kaliya Hamlin @IdentityWoman when she was in London with Drummond Reed, Phil Windley and many others for the WEF tiger team on Personal data.  The purpose is to move forward the conversation, solutions and projects and from this we pla
